A Fungal Ear Infection

Introduction

  • Otomycosis is a Non Invasive Fungal Infection of External Auditory Canal.
  • It is seen in Hot and Humid climate of Tropical and Sub Tropical Conditions.

Causative Organism

Otomycosis There are nearly 60 variety of fungi can cause this Infection, but the most common fungi are

  • Aspergillus Niger (Black Headed Filamentous Growth)
  • Aspergillus Fumigatus (Pale Blue or Green)
  • Candida Albicans (White or Creamy Deposits)


Causes

  • Ear Canal Trauma (Use of Ear Buds)
  • Swimming in Contaminated water
  • Myringitis
  • ASOM (Acute Suppurative Otitis Media)
  • CSOM (Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media)

Symptoms

  • Intense Itching
  • Pain
  • Discomfort
  • Watery Discharge
  • Musty Odour
  • Ear Blockage

Pathogenesis

  • Traumatic Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Discharge (Wet Ear)
  • Secondary Fungal Infection(Otomycosis)

Endoscopic Findings





Treatment

  • Remove all Fungus by Endoscopic Micro suction and Endoscopic Mopping with Antifungal Drops
  • Keep Ear Dry
  • Treat Otitis Externa (Inflammation, ASOM,…) with Antibiotics, Anti Inflammatory, Anti Histamine
  • Avoid Antifungal Ear Drops for Perforated Drum
